Real-Life Church Purchasing Stories

Several months ago I received a call from a woman who told me, “We’re building a new church building and I’ve been assigned to do the research on furnishings for our various ministry teams and environments. Can you help me?” We were pleased to assist her and over the following several weeks, we helped her put together a detailed resource packet for her church’s project. When we finished up, she told me, “My job was to do the legwork. I’ll be turning my work over to our leadership. When we’re ready to start purchasing, we’ll contact you. Thanks for all your help!”

A few weeks ago I received a call from the Facilities Director of her church. He asked me about some tables for their children’s area. I recognized the name of the church immediately and asked him how the project had gone for them. He told me they were close to being in the building, but money was extraordinarily tight and he was scrambling to save dollars on furnishings they vitally needed. We conversed a little longer and it became evident to me that there had been a communication breakdown along the way with their efforts. I learned they had already purchased 500 chairs for their worship area. I asked a few more questions and learned they had purchased the exact model chair we had recommended, but from another vendor. (Somehow they had retained our recommendations, but not our pricing!) Sadly, I also learned they had paid $25,500 for chairs that we quoted them $19,500 for. They could have saved $6,000 on that one purchase! Ironically, they were now desperately trying to save a few dollars on some tables for their children’s ministry from us when they could have had $6,000 more to work with!

I share this story with no sense of satisfaction. As I worked with this church, I felt their frustration of not being able to complete the furnishing of their new facility in the manner they had planned on. Our desire and purpose at SYCM is to save your church money. Hopefully we’ll work together to do so soon!
