The Generous Church Summit

Two weeks ago I attended the Generous Church Summit in Atlanta. There were a range of speakers but Andy Stanley’s two sessions were definitely the highlights for me. He covered the area of “stewardship” from a variety of angles and added numerous beneficial side notes. One side note he shared with the attendees really grabbed my attention. He stated that at his own staff meetings he will publicly affirm someone who has saved their church money, whether through spotting inefficiency in the organization, or even locating a better deal for the church on copy paper.

Coincidentally, I was seated at a table for this conference with Noel Heikkinen, pastor of Riverview Church in Holt, MI. I had never met Noel until this conference and had never spoken with him before arriving at the conference. Two weeks earlier though, Noel had worked with one of our SaveYourChurchMoney guys and Riverview had placed an order for 1200 chairs for their new worship area due to be completed this June.

In the discussion time that followed at our table over what Andy Stanley had challenged us with, Noel shared with the group that SYCM had saved Riverview major dollars on their chair purchase. I asked Noel how he knew that. Noel told us that because they really did not have a relationship with us (SYCM), he had pursued other bids on the same chairs (way to go Noel!).
