Real-Life Church Purchasing Stories

Geri Johnson called the SYCM office a while back. Her church had purchased 200 pew style chairs two years ago from another dealer. Now the church needed 40 more of the same chair. They called us because the dealer they had purchased the chairs from was no longer in business. The chair the church needed was one we carry and I quoted Geri a per chair price of $38 each. Geri immediately responded, “You must have the wrong chair! We paid $53 per chair two years ago!” The troubling part of this story is we did have the correct chair and likely two years ago; Geri’s price would have been even less at $33 a chair. As Geri realized how much she had overpaid two years ago, she started crying. As I listened across the phone line, it was apparent how seriously Geri had taken her responsibility in purchasing chairs for her church, and how badly she felt now as she realized she had seriously overpaid for those chairs two years ago. The $4,000 savings we would have provided her church could have been used for so many other important needs. I did my best to comfort Geri. I know she’ll be a customer of ours from this point forward. But I resolved again that we’re going to do everything we can to save churches money on all their furnishing purchases, so that fewer stories like Geri’s have to be told.
